Welcome to the YHEC                                  Hunt Masters                                               Program

Below are the 8 Disciplines that each team works on in the program with a very brief explanation of the activity.  There is no charge for participation.  A parent is required to attend each class and the classes meet every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month for 9 months.

Shotgunning

Here is where the student learns how to hit moving targets.  The class simulates hunting for different birds and their flight patterns as well as running animals.

 

Rifle

The 22 ca l rimfire rifle is a renowned firearm for youth sports and hunting small game.  In this challenge , each shooter will be shooting at targets 25, 50 and 75 yards away.  They will fire 10 rounds at each target and will utilize the prone, sitting, and standing positions.  The total possible score will be 300 points.

 

Muzzleloading

Participants will use either a flintlock, disk, musket cap, percussion or209 primer type muzzleloader.   See YHEC rules for further information.

 

Archery

The archery event will be conducted similar to the rifle shooting event. Participants will take shots a targets varying in distance up to 40 yards.

 

Wildlife ID

Participants will be shown slides and or walk through a field and/or woodland course in a natural setting.  The course is designed to simulate actual wildlife sign encounters while outdoors. Participants or teams should be familiar with wildlife including upland game, forest game, waterfowl, furbearers, endangered species and non-game species. 

 

Hunter Safety Trail

The participants will walk through a pre-determined trail designed to simulate actual hunting conditions and situations. The participant will be required to demonstrate their knowledge of hunter safety on this course.

 

Orienteering

Participants will be required to use a compass to follow a bearing to a  predetermined outdoor skill station. At each station, the participants will be required to demonstrate their knowledge of outdoor skills by answering questions or performing certain tasks

 

Hunter Responsibility

This challenge consists of 3 segments.  First there is a written test, followed by a slide show for participants to identify safe /unsafe situations or shoot.no shoot situations. Segment 3 consists of firearm types, actions and ammunition.
